Research suggests that sensed over-qualification afflicts at least one in five employees in the U.S. and only one in three in Australia, whereas in China a shocking four out of five employees believe they are over-qualified for their occupations.

Perhaps not surprisingly, unhappy workers make less effective workers. They sulk they don't co-operate they deny -- either consciously or unconsciously -- to give their very best.

And they are not enjoyable to worry about. Frustrated by the lack of comprehension of the abilities, they frequently become conceited and superior creating life unpleasant for people who need to manage them work together.

Sound familiar? Let us face it, a lot of us have been or will probably be in this place at a certain point in our careers -- sometimes you are merely dealt a lousy hand.

But what do you do to make your work life more stimulating brief of making a job move?

Occasionally you may end up in a circumstance where you're actually over-qualified for the role because the hirer wore rose-tinted spectacles or has just lied to you personally.

In such situations, it may be that the only answer would be to walk.

However, my own research into conditions in workplaces across the U.S., Europe, and China suggests that perceptions of both over-qualification along with the unhappiness and bitterness that they create can be dealt with in relatively simple ways.

But how?

It is not the job. It is exactly what you do with this

Oftentimes, the problem doesn't lie with the occupation itself, however, you are expected to carry it out. A substantial percentage of those who believe over-qualified to get a role object to the lack of control they have over the tasks they have to achieve.

Consequently, a highly effective way of overcoming this dilemma is to request more freedom in your work. You will seek increased freedom to make your own decisions, the ability to select your own procedures of doing a job or perhaps a flexible approach for the hours that you work.

Like every change, the pursuit of higher autonomy is very likely to fulfill at least some level of resistance. You will want to'sell' the thought to superiors in a way that will emphasize the mutual advantage it may bring.

And you're the best person to make that sale since you are the one which grips what motivates you and what is the perfect method to utilize your excess abilities, expertise, and understanding. Remember this isn't only about you. It is about reaching the ideal decision for all parties involved.

Stave Off the attitude

Reaching greater liberty may involve discussion with a variety of people from immediate managers to peer-group colleagues to members of the board.

And that means deploying your social abilities to the entire. The challenge, of course, is that among the very damaging side effects of sensed over-qualification is a marked deterioration in soft skills.

Too many victims either adopt an air of arrogance and entitlement or move off sulking in their metaphorical tent including some latter-day Achilles. So drop the attitude and engage. Only by building good relationships with people around and above it is possible to you realistically create, not only the job that you would like but the one which you deserve.
